“Every lesson in Art must also include cultural teachings. It's very difficult to separate the two, because Native American children are sensitized to all of nature which also includes spirituality, needing to incorporate all senses in order to formulate complete ideas. This creates an additional challenge to a teacher, to teach holistically, and this is why art therapy will work well with our cultural Ways”

“We invited Carey to present for 45 sixth grade Native students. The content was sensitive using words that a sixth grade student would understand about trauma. A lesson on how to talk to a trusted person at school, suggesting counselors, teachers, social worker or others. I observed the students quieting down as they listened to her words. Carey’s gentle and humble approach was part of her ability to capture the students’ attention. She used humor appropriately, in the way Native people (students) use humor when sensitive topics are verbalized. There was one student who spoke up with comments that indicated that she understood what to do for a friend. The behavior of the group of energetic sixth graders indicated that they did get the message. The adult chaperones and teachers who accompanied the students did share that the speaker presented the content of trauma in the “right way” [Culturally Competent] and were appreciative, acknowledging that it is needed.”
